As a child, I often watched my father, Walter, work glass at the shop where he made his living. To earn a dollar or two myself, I would sweep up the fallen scraps. Over time, my father and his co- workers, each a finely skilled craftsman, first taught me the basics and then the subtle nuances of cutting and polishing glass and mirror. Confident with the expertise passed down to me, and with a strong conviction that I could learn to do it even better, I struck out on my own in the early 1980s. In my father's Valley Stream, New York garage, with a few close friends and a new van, the company that would later become Showercrafters was born. From the beginning, we did exactly what we promised for our customers. We delivered top-quality products, on time, at a fair price. As a result, happy customers referred new customers, our reputation spread, and Showercrafters outgrew Dad's garage. Twenty-one years later, after outgrowing second and third locations, business was booming, but I still believed Showercrafters could be better for our customers. We were selling and installing shower enclosures provided by other manufacturers, which meant that sometimes we could not meet every aspect of a customer's requirement for quality materials, on-time delivery, parts availability, and economy. To me, this was simply unacceptable. It was time to eliminate middlemen and take complete control of our customers' satisfaction.
